Overwhelmed and Paralyzed, Too?

Are you feeling paralyzed like I am?

I found myself staring into space a lot this week. I want everything to be so perfect! I can see it in my head. A clean house, prepped meals, a happy family, engaged students and new lessons that inspire them to dig deeper and grow.

I smile just thinking about it. The vision of normal and everything I create feels so good. When I come out of my daydream and look around my house or office, I realize that I am so far away from that vision.

What I should do, what I WANT to do - is start creating that scenario. But what I ACTUALLY do is feel that familiar twinge of overwhelm and I pick up my phone to see if I have a new message and get sucked into the habit loop of scrolling. I gain nothing from this.

I'm hearing my teacher friends go into their classrooms and bursting into tears because nothing is like it's supposed to be! We aren't just following the same joyful, let's make our door decorations and put up our bulletin boards. Meet with our team for our favorite opening day lessons and to analyze the data for our new kids so we are excited to accelerate their growth with our favorite teaching practices. Reviewing the changes and "new initiatives" that always seem like way too much.
Nothing is on auto pilot this year.

Choose Happy over Fear

My girl ran to her room crying. The boy had just dropped and broke the first plate he ever painted and it was the last straw to a bummer day. 😢

Our power was out until early afternoon which meant no “shows”, no reading light for reading in her cozy bed like she wanted to do, and no WiFi for video games in our home and we don’t pay for unlimited cell phone data. ⚡She went shopping with Marshall to find blow up inner tubes to go floating down Minnehaha Creek only to find nothing. We couldn’t open our garage to get out the bikes and everything was hopeless. 

It was time for a chat. I’ve read enough personal development for coaching that I KNOW that our thoughts are what dictate our emotions. 😘 This 8 year old has heard me say “you can choose” so many times, I knew it wasn’t going to work without more this time. 

I asked her what she was thinking about. I did NOT give ample wait time, so I answered her with the scenario above and pointed out all the things we couldn’t do today. 🙏

Then I asked the boy - the 4 year old who was his happy self why today was awesome. He said, ‘Drawing, playing a game, being lazy, and hugging my lions”

I said, “See. His day is the same! You both are in the same house with the same power out, but his thoughts on the happy parts just makes him happier.  😍 You can decide what your thoughts are and change if you are happy or sad today.” 

And I actually think she got it! Teachers, you know that feeling of heck yes! I pulled that out of my A** and it was the perfect teaching moment. 🤣

As she got up to make lunch for the two of them (PB and Nutella sandwiches) it was clear she felt a little lighter. 

I watched her and thought of you. 😁 Are you thinking of the positives for fall like you did in the spring? Are you thinking of how you are going to learn how to do even better online and with technology than you ever have, that this shows how grateful you are to have a job you love and just may never take it for granted again? There’s also a space here for real honest reflection and bravery - maybe you LIKED teaching distance learning better than in the classroom! 

Or are you thinking of how hard it’s all going to be and how worried you are? 😳

The ONLY difference between teachers who are dreading the school year right now and the ones who are excited are thoughts. ❤ None of us have a crystal ball to see what the school year will bring. But start following and paying attention to teachers who are posting optimism. Spend this next week thinking about the hopeful things you CAN control. Or shoot! Take a break from thinking about the school year at ALL. It’s still summer, y’all! ⛱

I challenge you. This week. ONLY respond to and share hopeful and positive posts. Ones that are looking forward to the challenge, that know that the fears are real, but they are CHOOSING happiness and light. ☀️ Watch how your heart changes too. I’ll drop a couple of my favorites in the comments.

Pineapple Pork Tacos (Family Fav!)

I have had these pork tacos on my list to make for weeks and finally remembered to put it in the crockpot early enough to actually eat them for dinner. My family LOVED them and they couldn't be easier.  Callie at 2 and Lleyton tried to eat most of the pineapple on the side, but finished his with a smile, too. 

What's funny is that I made these on a Monday so my kids were alllll confused and thought it was Tuesday. They take Taco Tuesday pretty seriously!

Live: Find Your Rest

So how do we "rest" from something like this quarantine that is consuming our entire society right now? How do we rest from the constant changes and new things being canceled to absorb, more fear about death, and using all of the energy we have left to "try to be positive." We get to the positive place, and another thing outside of our control knocks us back down to the beginning. This is what is exhausting. The constant cycle without knowing when it will end.

I was just thinking. I've actually done this before. Twice. I've been isolated and been anxious about the health of myself and one of my family members. Now it's not exactly the same, obviously - but I'm drawing on this example. Because it's so much easier to look back and know we have conquered hardship before.

How to Workout at Home

With this crazy coronavirus outbreak or just because you can't find time to go the gym, working out at home is totally doable and more effective than I ever dreamed! I've been doing this for 4 years and am so grateful this is the one part of my life that isn't altered at all!

So as gyms have closed, for the time being, I thought I would give you my advice for working out at home.  It is SOOOOO important that you move every day - especially when much of our work will be so much more sedentary than usual. (teachers that aren't standing all day??)

Your Physical and Mental Health First

I slept terribly for the last 2 nights.  All of the planning and work we did on Day 1 of Distance Learning Planning was exhausting and we left with more questions than answers. Day 2 was filled with waving at students from afar as their families picked up work, iPads, and items from their lockers to get them through if school is closed longer than 3 weeks.  We sent home books and if families asked to check out from our library, the only limit was how many books they could carry. The fact that the MN governor's office has given us this gift of 2 full weeks to completely change the way we teach and kids learn is also a call to excellence.

Last night, it was everything I could do to not start sobbing and pull it together for my family at home.
